Gorkhaland protests: Supreme Court comes to Sikkim’s rescue

Today the Supreme Court directed the Central government and the State of West Bengal to ensure uninterrupted and safe vehicular movement on the National Highway-10, Sikkim’s only road link with the rest of India which has been blocked by the Gorkhaland protests.  At least 20 trucks ferrying supplies to Sikkim were vandalised and truck drivers were assaulted.
The Government of Sikkim approached the Supreme Court seeking directions to ensure the safety of vehicles on NH 10.
Earlier on 9th July, Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling stated that Sikkim has lost over Rs 60,000 crore during the 32 years of Gorkhaland agitation due to blockade of the NH-10.
The Central government also informed the 3-judge bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra that 11 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) are already deployed in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts and another four companies of CRPF will be sent to provide security and ensure proper supply of essential commodities during the ongoing Gorkhaland protest.
The bench directed that the West Bengal government shall use the CRPF companies only for maintaining law and order in the two districts.
