आमाले भनिन "छोरा! तिमीलाई हाम्रो आशिर्वाद छ, तिमी पढेर ठूलो मान्छे हुनेछौ। ठूलो मान्छे भएमा सबैको ह्र्दयमा बास लिनु। सबैमा समदृष्टी राख्नु। एकदिन तिमी यो सन्सार छोडेर जानैपर्छ। त्यस दिन तिम्रो माया गरेर जति धेरै मलामी आउनेछन, उति धेरै तिमी धनी भएको सम्झनु...

Gangtok/New Delhi:  Nar Bahadur Bhandari, an obscure school teacher, who rose to become one of the longest-serving chief ministers of Sikkim, died today, state government sources said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of Mr Bhandari and praised his role in Sikkim's progress.
"Saddened by the demise of Shri Nar Bahadur Bhandari. His contribution towards Sikkim's progress will always be remembered. My condolences," the prime minister's office said in a twitter post.
Born in 1940 at Malbasey in West Sikkim, Mr Bhandari was a teacher in a government school before he joined active politics.
He became the chief minister of the tiny Himalyan state for the first time in 1979 on a Janata Parishad ticket and then again in 1984 and 1989 on a Sikkim Sangram Parishad ticket. The founder of the SSP, Mr Bhandari remained its president till his death.
Known as a pragmati and resilient leader, Mr Bhandari was the second chief minister after L D Kazi to hold the reins of the fledgling state which officially became a part of the Indian Union in 1975.
He was also a former president of Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee.
Chief Minister Pawan Chamling condoled the death of Mr Bhandari.
"I am extremely sad and shocked to know about the untimely demise of Shri Nar Bahadur Bhandari. With his passing away, Sikkim has lost a worthy son of the soil whose contribution to the state and its people are unparalleld."

Personal life

Nar Bahadur Bhandari was born on 5 October 1940 in Malbasay village, near Soreng, West Sikkim. He completed his BA degree from Darjeeling Government College and worked as a school teacher for some years before joining politics. His wife Dil Kumari Bhandari is a former member of parliament (Lok Sabha) from Sikkim.

Politics

Bhandari founded the Sikkim Janata Parishad in 1977. This party won the state assembly election held in 1979 and he became the chief minister for the first time on 18 October 1979 In 1984, he also served briefly as Member of Parliament from Sikkim constituency in the 8th Lok Sabha as an independent candidate. In 1984, Bhandari dissolved the Sikkim Janata Parishad and formed a new party called Sikkim Sangram Parishad. This party contested the assembly elections in 1985 and won, and Bhandari became the chief minister for the second time. In 1989, Sikkim Sangram Parishad returned to power by winning the assembly elections. In 1994, Bhandari lost the vote of confidence in the state assembly and he resigned as chief minister.
In 1994, Bhandari's party Sikkim Sangram Parishad lost the assembly elections to Pawan Kumar Chamling-led Sikkim Democratic Front. Sikkim Sangram Parishad also lost the 1999 assembly election. In the 2004 state assembly elections, Bhandari contested under the Congress party but the party lost the election, winning only one seat.Again in the 2009 assembly elections the Congress party under Bhandari failed to win any seat in the state assembly. But there are cases pending in the court of law regarding the conduct of elections. There are charges of elections being rigged.

Present

Bhandari became the president of the Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC) after he had merged his party Sikkim Sangram Parishad with the Indian National Congress in 2003. In May 2013, he was reinstated as the president of the Sikkim Sangram Parishad.

Death

Bhandari died on July 16, 2017.
